Chapter 6 — Providing

Daisy

Sighing as she walked into her apartment, she locked the door behind her. Leaning back against it, she relaxed. She smiled and enjoyed the stillness of quiet for a long heartbeat.

This was usually the time of day she loved best. The early evening beckoned her to go for a walk, and the cool, crisp air promised to be a refreshing change from the stuffiness of her classroom. Instead, Daisy felt anxious and out of sorts at the situation she found herself in. What was the mayor’s end game?

She didn’t like knowing that the Sybil Franklin or the principal advocated using a whistle that could potentially deafen her students. A loose idea formed in Daisy’s mind about bringing this up at the next school board meeting. And maybe Aspen would have an idea about someone who could run in opposition to Franklin.

Daisy’s contract didn’t cover all of this, but she felt exasperated at the situation. Her kids deserved the best education they could get and not have a teaching staff out to make their ears literally bleed. She wondered if she could have handled the situation differently but one thing was certain, those whistles had to go. Yes, occasionally the kids shifted. But they were still just kids. There had to be a better way other than what amounted to corporal punishment.

Deciding she wasn’t going to understand it while just standing in her living room, Daisy kicked off her shoes and poured a glass of wine. It was Friday, and she was going to enjoy the evening. She turned on the gas fireplace and settled in with her favorite shifter romance author. Brain break now. Solve the world’s problems later.

An hour into her book, a noise caught her attention. She hadn’t heard from Finn since the school, so when the knock came at the door, Daisy wasn’t surprised. Putting down her book, she walked to the door. “Hey.”

“You didn’t look to see who it was.” Finn’s body filled the doorway.

She smiled. “Who else would it be.” Daisy moved away from the door to let Finn inside her cottage.

“I’m sorry about today. Those damn whistles, though. Seeing them is a huge reminder.”

Daisy touched the soft swell of his lips. “I understand. I feel like the mayor has lied to me since the beginning. Is potentially lying to everyone.”

Finn stilled, and Daisy became acutely aware that they were alone. It was late. Heat rose from her core, and the fingers against his lips wanted to explore more of him. Her breath caught when their gazes met with mutual accord.

“We’ll make the changes we need,” Finn said softly.

Daisy blinked up at him, slightly distracted by the desire descending on them like steam on a hot day. She had no clue what he meant. “Changes?”

“For mayor.” Finn’s lips brushed hers. A gentle friction generating enough heat for those early tendrils of awareness to turn into a tremoring passion.

Her eyes slid closed as she reached for another kiss. On some distant plane, she realized they were still having a conversation, but her brain refused to cooperate.
